The Den

Here in the Den, there are many opportunities to learn more about the game-based learning school in New York City known as "Quest to Learn."

Quest to Learn, Katie Salen (and others), The MIT Press, 2011. (One can download a free copy of this book at http://dmlcentral.net/sites/dmlcentral/files/resource_files/Quest_to_LearnMacfoundReport.pdf,
then read from page 29 down to stop just above "Situating Assessment" on page 40.)

The discussion of "Game-Based Learning and Knowing" that underlies Quest to Learn is interesting and worth further comment. As you read pages 29-40, notice (and offer your comments and thoughts about) the discussion of the History and Foundations in theory and research that go into the Quest to Learn concept. Be sure you speak to the concept of "situated learning" and how research supports the concept as well as how research forms the precedent for systems thinking. Systems thinking then leads to a redefinition of critical thinking and a reframing of literacy -- in what ways. There truly is much to think about and discuss. A good write-up ("G-B Learning and Knowing" subject, Pilgrimage topic, Discussion Tab, Adventurer's Log) can be worth up to 10 XPs.
